One of the oldest clichés in existence is the dog versus cat rivalry. Cartoons, literature and popular culture are full of stories about cats and dogs fighting it out. The truth, as anyone who has owned both dogs and cats at the same time will tell you, is much calmer.
I recently acquired a stray cat to add to my zoo of four small dogs. At first I was afraid that the dogs would harass the new kitty or even hurt him. For several days I protected the cat from these little bullies. One day I simple let nature take it course. I heard the squeal of one of the dogs and saw her quickly retire to the safety of the sofa. The cat looked unperturbed. Now, I spend the majority of my time stopping the cat from harassing the poor, neurotic dogs. Things are not always as we have been taught, but sometimes they are. Occasionally dogs do not take well to the family cat. Here's what you can do to keep the peace.
Stop dog nipping problems

Don't even let the dog approach the cat. Teach the dog quickly that the cat is absolutely off limits just like the bed or the couch or whatever. The dog will soon associate the cat with punishment and leave it well alone.
Bribery
Use treats to distract your dog from the cat and to associate good behavior with rewards. If the dog even notices the cat, then no treat. If he remains focused on you, then he gets a treat. Give the dog the treats with the cat in your lap. This will make the dog associate the treats with the cat and he will be happy to see kitty and won't want to run the cat away.

Don't forget that the cat can be the instigator also. Just like my cat, many felines like to antagonize dogs when they see that you will protect them. Kitty must be punished for bad behavior as quickly as Fido.
Cats and dogs sometimes fight just like brothers and sisters or husbands and wives. Usually the fight is a minor matter and is quickly forgotten with nothing more than hurt feelings. If the situation is more serious, then you may need the services of a professional trainer or behavioralist.
